How To Make Post Or Status System Like Facebook in php

Why learn to build a posting like Facebook ?

Facebook which has around 21.50 Billion (‘Monthly Visits’) and worldwide global rank #3.This is the website used by approximately each and every person who accesses the internet.

So why not?

Fields which are related to programming , developing or enhancing a skill set or even it can be learning a programming language and in the process of mastering anything ,The very first thing you have to do is you need to come out of your shell.

Which means learn!.

In this case we are learning PHP as well as PDO and OOP, a little bit of Jquery & of course Javascript ,By Creating a Posting System like Facebook.

So let's get started

Do you know that you can build Multi Blogging platform like Blogger in PHP here is the Link :

View Demo | Download Full Codes ("View-Demo is not working for now please try later!")
First create database and name it posting-system

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `users` (
  `user_id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  `username` varchar(60) NOT NULL,
  `password` varchar(255) NOT NULL,
  `first_name` varchar(40) NOT NULL,
  `last_name` varchar(55) NOT NULL,
  `profile_image` varchar(255) NOT NULL,
   PRIMARY KEY (`user_id`)
);
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `posts` (
  `post_id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  `user_id_p` int(11) NOT NULL,
  `status` text NOT NULL,
  `status_image` varchar(255) NOT NULL,
  `status_time` timestamp NOT NULL DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP ON UPDATE CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
  PRIMARY KEY (`post_id`)
);
and add user to users table

INSERT INTO `users` (`user_id`, `username`, `password`, `first_name`, `last_name`, `profile_image`) VALUES
(1, 'aizaz.dinho', '098f6bcd4621d373cade4e832627b4f6', 'aizaz', 'dinho', 'images/profile.jpg');
your username is aizaz.dinho and password is test
Now make connection to the database

<?php
 try {
    $pdo = new PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=posting-system', 'root', '');

} catch (PDOException $e) {
    print "Connetion Error!: " . $e->getMessage() . "<br/>";
    die();
}
?>
Make Main php in core folder

<?php
 session_start();
 include 'class/functions.php';
 include 'connection.php';
?>
And make class folder in core folder and make clsss.php in core folder class.php will hanlde our functions

&lt?php
 class  Main{
  //login function
  public function login($username,$password){
   global $pdo;
    $query = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * from users WHERE username = ? and password = ?");
   $query->bindValue(1,$username);
   $query->bindValue(2,$password);
   $query->execute();
      $rows = $query->fetch(PDO::FETCH_NUM);

    if($rows > 0){
     $_SESSION['user_id'] = $rows[0];
     header('Location: index.php');
     exit();
     }else{
       echo  'Username or Password is incorrect ';
           }
  }

  //check user is logged in or not
  public function logged_in(){
   return (isset($_SESSION['user_id'])) ? true : false;
  }
  //fetching posts from database
  public function posts(){
   global $pdo;
   $query = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM `posts`,`users` WHERE user_id = user_id_p ORDER BY `post_id` DESC");
   $query->execute();
   return $query->fetchAll();
  }
  //add new post if user post
  public function add_post($user_id,$status,$file_parh){
   global $pdo;
   if(empty($file_parh)){
    $file_parh = 'NULL';
   }
   $query = $pdo->prepare('INSERT INTO `posts` (`post_id`, `user_id_p`, `status`, `status_image`, `status_time`) VALUES (NULL, ?, ?,?,  CURRENT_TIMESTAMP)');
   $query->bindValue(1,$user_id);
   $query->bindValue(2,$status);
   $query->bindValue(3,$file_parh);
   $query->execute();
   header('Location: index.php');
  }
  //fetch user data by user id
  public function user_data($user_id){
   global $pdo;
   $query = $pdo->prepare('SELECT * FROM users WHERE user_id = ?');
   $query->bindvalue(1,$user_id);
   $query->execute();

   return $query->fetch();
  }
  //timeAgo Function

       if($weeks==1){
           return "a week ago";
       }else{
           return "$weeks weeks ago";
       }
   }
   //Months
   else if($months <=12){
       if($months==1){
           return "a month ago";

    2. Hello Chris maybe you misplace the code, try to download fresh copy of codes and also download the database from here https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4q4IW6m2bK9amxKelZQX0U0djQ/ and replace posting-system with posting_system in connection.php

  7. How can i change the password (and how the new password can be encoded just like you did with 'test' ) ?

    1. Go to the database (phpmyadmin) and edit the users table and on the password field choose MD5 encryption that's it

    1. in the database status_time is set ON UPDATE CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, so whenever you update your post it will update the time. make sure you didn't change anything in the class.php add_post prepare query

    But can you please help me as when I copied it to my files and folders I received this message in the browser:
    Fatal error: Call to a member function prepare() on null in C:\wamp64\www\pt1\class\functions.php on line 48.
    And line 48 is like it is on your file $query = $pdo->prepare('SELECT * FROM users WHERE user_id = ?');
    Thank you!

    Hi, do i enter my login details when i code the function here ? class Main{
    //login function
    public function login($username,$password){
    global $pdo;
    $query = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * from users WHERE username = ? and password = ?");

    or i just leave it as it is. coz nothing happens when i punch in my login details. and i have done all the steps shown on the tutorial

    1. Leave it as it is, make sure you added the users in the users table and add the database name into your connection.php which will be in core folder. and also try to download the code again.

      ok thanks brother. it is working now but the only two things i dont get is when i click on login it pops up this

      "Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/movingso/public_html/index.php:60) in /home/movingso/public_html/core/class/functions.php on line 14

      then i have to refresh the page again so that it passes that error.

      and again it is not allowing me to login with any other password unless i use "test" even on other users i have created
